Transform and develop is a major production hub, covering refining, petrochemicals and some specialty chemicals. Total was the first international oil company to participate in a refinery in China in 1996 together with partners Sinochem, PetroChina, and the municipality of Dalian. The refinery processes high-sulfur crude oil imported from the Middle East with a current annual capacity of 10 MT.

Since 1995, Hutchinson, Total’s Specialty Chemicals subsidiary has opened a series of production facilities in China, becoming a full-fledged industrial player in the regional market. Hutchinson develops products made from rubber processing – including sealing systems, insulation, fluid transfer systems, antivibration and transmission mobility – for the automotive, railway and other industries, with manufacturing plants in Suzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing and Shenyang.
In 2003, Total opened its first petrochemicals plant in China. This polystyrene plant is located in Foshan, Guangdong province, producing both general-purpose and high-impact polystyrene. The current production capacity of the plant is 200,000 tons per year.
In Nov. 2014, Total inaugurated a new 200 kilotons-per-year (kta) polystyrene plant in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, which will allow Total to actively participate in the development of the high-end polystyrene market in China and reinforce its position among the leading companies in Asia.
